Fidya is a payment to charity if you cannot fast during Ramadan. This includes if you're elderly, pregnant, ill, or have a medical condition making you unable to fast. You should pay it before you miss a fast, or before Ramadan if you know you can't participate for the whole month.

Fidya payments are meant to feed a miskeen (person in need) for each of the fasting days missed. The estimated cost, on guidance from the Fiqh Council of North America, is $10 for each day missed or $300 for all of Ramadan.
